Mean Green Fight Back For Draw at USF

TAMPA, Fla. — Senior Peyton Renfro scored her third goal of the season – and her career – and her first since Sept. 4, in the 61st minute of Thursday's match at South Florida to pull the Mean Green equal, and sophomore goalkeeper Hicks Bishop and UNT's back line held strong to hold on for a 1-1 draw.
After South Florida (7-7-2, 3-3-2 American) scored in the 42nd minute to take a first-half lead, the Mean Green generated eight second-half shots and got one to count in the 61st when sophomore Claire Niedermeier broke loose in the box and caught the Bulls' goalkeeper out of position and sent a shot to the back post at a tight angle. Renfro didn't leave the angle to chance and tapped the ball into the net to pull the Mean Green equal.
UNT (5-9-4, 1-4-3) earned its third straight draw, and did it without starting keeper Alina Arneth, who missed the game with an injury. But Bishop, who began the season as the starter, stepped up in several key spots and finished with two saves on the night, along with several other big plays in net.
She wasn't alone, as UNT's defense stood tall all night, particularly behind the play of senior leaders Abi Major and Rachel Roebuck. Sophomore defender Ella Bushko had one of the night's biggest plays when Bishop was beaten in the 52nd minute but Bushko was parked on the goal line and kept the ball from going in to preserve the 1-0 deficit.
"I'm really proud of the girls tonight," head coach John Hedlund said. "They all knew we needed a result tonight against a very talented USF team on their home turf, and we got it. Credit to all the players, my staff and Peyton's goal for getting a result at a very tough place to play."
The Mean Green will next play FAU (4-10-3, 1-5-2) on Sunday at noon before heading home for the final regular-season match on Oct. 30, against UAB (5-5-6, 2-3-3).
