Soccer Stays Alive With Win at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive going into the regular season's final week, the Mean Green took a first-half lead and made it stand in a 1-0 road win at Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Mia Bernard was the offensive catalyst, as she got past a defender in the box, cut back to the middle and fired a right-footed shot that was deflected by FAU's goalkeeper but slipped past her toward the goal line. The keeper retreated and tried to save the ball from crossing the line but hit it off one of her teammates into the net. The goal was initially credited as Bernard's seventh of the season but then changed to an own goal.
UNT (6-9-4, 2-4-3) got superb play from its defense, as FAU actually outshot the Mean Green – a rarity this season – but only had four shots on frame, as opposed to UNT's six. For the second straight match, sophomore Hicks Bishop drew the start in goal due to an injury suffered by Alina Arneth, and Bishop was great again on Sunday after a strong effort in Thursday's 1-1 draw at South Florida. Bishop had four saves on the day and also got a lot of help from her back line consisting of Ella Bushko, Hannah Phillips, Abi Major, Rachel Roebuck and Lillian Vandiver.
"It's always a close, hard fought match between these two championship programs," head coach John Hedlund said. "The difference always comes down to finishing for the day, and credit Mia for getting one by their keeper. Their three forwards are a handful, so credit Hicks and our defense for getting the shutout today against a very talented offensive team."
The Mean Green will now prepare for their regular-season finale needing a win over UAB (6-5-6, 3-3-3) to extend its conference unbeaten streak to five and get into the American Women's Soccer Championship, which will begin Nov. 3, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
