Mestemaker, Hawkins Added to Alexander Watch List

PHILADELPHIA - UNT redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker and freshman running back Caleb Hawkins were both added to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award watch list on Tuesday by the Maxwell Football Club.
The award, which is given to the top freshman in college football, has been awarded since 2018.
Mestemaker is off to a red-hot start to the season and has led the Mean Green to a 5-0 record for the first time since 1959 with 1,247 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He's also added 65 yards on the ground and a pair of rushing touchdowns. He has piloted the nation's eighth-ranked scoring offense.
Hawkins has burst onto the scene over the last two games and is second on the team in rushing with 307 yards and leads the team with seven rushing touchdowns, while adding 120 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
Past winners of the award include current NFL stars like Trevor Lawrence, Drake Maye and Brock Bowers.
