Hammonds named weekly award winner for Bronco Nagurski while Hawkins wins Doak Walker
DENTON, Texas – UNT football players Quinton Hammonds and Caleb Hawkins were named national weekly award winners after stellar performances in the win over Navy, the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) announced Tuesday.
Hammonds, who already earned American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, was named the Bronco Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week while Hawkins picked up Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week honors.
A sophomore out of Allen, Texas, Hammonds had a huge performance in the victory over the Midshipmen with two interceptions and four tackles. Hammonds first interception came in a one-handed effort with Navy driving while trailing by only seven points while the second came in the red zone to seal the victory.
Hawkins, meanwhile, rushed 33 times for 197 yards and matched a program record with eight rushing touchdowns. The freshman from Shawnee, Oklahoma, accounted for 24 of the Mean Green's 31 total points in the game with the other seven coming from kicker Kali Nguma.
It is the first time in program history a North Texas player has won either national award.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Doak Walker Trophy are members of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards. The NCFAA's 25 awards have honored more than 950 recipients since 1935. This season, 13 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
The Mean Green are now 8-1 for the first time since 1977 as they enter the bye week before taking on UAB on Nov. 15.
