Hammonds Named American Defensive Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – UNT sophomore defensive back Quinton Hammonds had four tackles and two interceptions in a 31-17 win over previously unbeaten Navy on Saturday at DATCU Stadium, and for his effort, the Allen, Texas, native was named the American Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Hammonds' first interception came in the third quarter and led to a North Texas touchdown - giving the team 90 points off turnovers this season, which is the second-most in program history since 2000. His second interception came with less than five minutes remaining in the game and sealed UNT's eighth win of the season.

Hammonds is sixth on the team in tackles this season with 38, to go with his 4.0 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and, now, two interceptions. He is the second UNT defensive player to earn Player of the Week honors this season after Shane Whitter won the award following the team's win over Washington State.

In addition, UNT freshman running back Caleb Hawkins was an Honorable Mention selection by the American after rushing for 197 yards on 33 attempts with four touchdowns in the win over the Midshipmen.
