IRVING - UNT freshman running back Caleb Hawkins rushed for a program-record five touchdowns, including four in the first half, and rolled up 210 total yards in a 53-24 win over UAB on Saturday to lift the Mean Green to a 9-1 record and a No. 22 ranking in this week's Associated Press poll.
For his effort, the freshman from Shawnee, Oklahoma, was named the American Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Hawkins now has 19 total touchdowns (16 rushing, 3 receiving), which ties him for the nation's lead and it also makes him the new program record holder for touchdowns by a freshman in a single season – previously held by Jamario Thomas (2004). Saturday's performance marked Hawkins' third game with at least four rushing touchdowns.
In his nine games, Hawkins is the team's leading rusher with 933 yards and is also the team's fifth-leading receiver with 294 yards through the air.
