Hawkins Named Semifinalist for Doak Walker Award

True freshman from Shawnee, Oklahoma, named one of 10 semifinalist for best running back in FBS
DALLAS – UNT football true freshman running back Caleb Hawkins was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's top running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Tuesday.
Hawkins was one of 10 FBS running backs to earn the honor and the only true freshman on the list.
Out of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Hawkins has had a stellar first season with the Mean Green rushing 148 times for 933 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has also caught 25 passes for 294 yards and three more scores.
Hawkins is tied for the most TDs scored in FBS (19) and sits sixth in all-purpose yards (136.3), second in rush TDs (16), 14th in yards per carry (6.3) and eighth in rush yards per game (103.7).
In the win over UAB, Hawkins set a school record with five rushing scores while rushing 27 times for 189 yards.
Since taking over as the starting running back for the USF game, he has rushed for 626 yards and nine touchdowns while also producing 18 catches for 174 yards and two more scores in the receiving game.
Named after Doak Walker, a legendary figure in college football and the NFL, the Doak Walker Award presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has been awarded to the nation's top running back since 1990.
The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards. The NCFAA's 25 awards have honored more than 950 recipients since 1935. This season, 13 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
