IRVING - UNT sophomore wide receiver Wyatt Young caught eight passes for an American Conference record 295 yards - the most of any FBS player this season - and had a pair of long touchdown catches in Saturday's 56-24 win over Rice to lift the Mean Green to a 10-1 record and a No. 21 ranking in this week's Associated Press poll.
For his effort, the high school quarterback-turned-wide receiver was named the American Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
On the season, Young has 56 receptions for 1,076 yards and a team-high 10 touchdown receptions to go with one rushing score this year. He's averaged 19.21 yards per reception and is averaging 97.82 yards per game. His 1,076 yards this season puts him sixth on the program's all-time single-season record.
His 295 yards on Saturday was his fourth 100-yard receiving day in the past five games. His game Saturday of 8+ catches, 295+ yards and 2+ touchdowns was the first such performance in FBS this season and only the seventh since 2020. Other names on that list include Carolina Panthers rookie Tetairoa McMillan (Arizona), Seattle Seahawks superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Ohio State) and New England Patriots receiver Kayshon Boutte (LSU).
The Mean Green will look to clinch a spot in the American Championship and pick up their 11th win of the season when they host Temple on Friday at 2:30 p.m., in the regular-season finale.
