North Texas improves to 5-1, will face Texas Tech Thursday at 2 p.m.
FRISCO, Texas – A final defensive stand in double overtime was enough for the UNT women's basketball team to outlast Saint Mary's 67-65 Wednesday afternoon in the first of two games at the Hoopfest Women's Basketball Challenge at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
A matchup between two of the top-20 scoring defenses in the country turned out exactly as one would expect with the game knotted at 53 after regulation. Both teams had a chance to win at the end of regulation with Megan Nestor's floater from the lane hitting the front rim before Saint Mary's secured the ball and called a timeout with 0.8 seconds remaining. After moving the ball to the frontcourt, Mauriana Hashemian-Orr's last-second attempt went in but was waved off after review.
Andi Schissler came alive in the first overtime period, knocking down two of her four 3-pointers on the day. After entering the second overtime tied at 61, UNT used a quick 6-2 run to take the lead. Edie Clark brought Saint Mary's back to within one possession, but her final attempt bounced off the rim as UNT improved to 5-1 on the season.
"I thought we showed a lot of resilience today," head coach Jason Burton said. "We're still learning a lot about our team, but it's back-to-back games in which we had to play games down to the wire and find ways to win, and really good teams find ways to win."
Chania Price provided the spark North Texas needed to get going after scoring just seven points in the first quarter. The sophomore guard posted seven points of her own in the second quarter and finished with nine points and four steals in a season-high 31 minutes. Jazzy Owens-Barnett and Aysia Proctor led the Mean Green in the second half, combining for 22 of UNT's 28 points. Proctor ended up with a game-high 17 points, while Owens-Barnett added 15 points in the best scoring performance of her UNT career.
North Texas will have a quick turnaround with undefeated Texas Tech waiting. Tomorrow's matchup with the Lady Raiders will tipoff at 2 p.m. from the Comerica Center.
