The Mean Green will face Saint Mary’s on Wednesday and Texas Tech on Thursday
DENTON, Texas – UNT women's basketball will spend the Thanksgiving holiday competing at the Hoopfest Women's Basketball Challenge on Nov. 26-27 at the Comerica Center in Frisco. The Mean Green will take on Saint Mary's for the first time in program history Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. CT before facing Texas Tech on Thursday at 2 p.m. to close out the event.
North Texas enters the tournament coming off a 58-55 win over SMU in its first road game of the season Saturday. Despite not hitting a 3-pointer in the contest, the Mean Green were able to secure the program's first ever victory over an active ACC member behind Aysia Proctor's 16 points and a double double from Megan Nestor. Proctor was named to the American Conference's weekly honor roll for her performance against the Mustangs.
Although the offense has had impressive performances in the first three games of the season where the Mean Green surpassed 100 points twice and were averaging 99 points per game, the defense has been consistent over the first two weeks. Through the first five games, North Texas is holding opponents to 30.2% from the field and just 50 points per game, which rank No. 6 and No. 16 in Division I.
The matchup with Saint Mary's is shaping up to be another defensive slugfest with the Gaels allowing just 49.2 points per game. At 5-1 on the year, Saint Mary's will arrive in Frisco following its first loss of the season at the hands of Cal on Thursday. The Gaels will take on Oregon Tuesday afternoon in their first game of the MTE.
UNT's second opponent, Texas Tech, is 7-0 on the season and will face Old Dominion Tuesday evening. The Lady Raiders will present a tall challenge for the Mean Green with eight players standing 6 feet or taller, including Jalynn Bristow and Snudda Collins who lead the team in scoring. Guard Bailey Maupin, Collins and Bristow all average over 16 points per game on the season.
The meeting with Texas Tech will be the first since 2001 for the Mean Green and the 13th total in program history. The Lady Raiders hold the advantage in the series 10-2 with UNT's last win coming in 1979.
Both games of the Hoopfest Women's Basketball Challenge will be streamed on FloSports. They can also be heard on the Varsity Network app with Sam Kaman on the call.
