IRVING - The UNT football team had a pair of players honored by the American Conference on Monday, as freshman running back Caleb Hawkins was named the American Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore kicker Kali Nguma was named the American Special Teams Player of the Week for their performances in Friday's 52-25 win over Temple.
Hawkins picked up his third weekly award after becoming the only FBS player since 1995 to rush for four touchdowns in a game four times after his 25-carry, 186-yard effort and another four rushing scores to bring his season total to 23 (his 26th overall touchdown), which leads FBS. Hawkins is up to 1,216 rushing yards for the season, despite not playing the better part of two games. He's also the team's fifth leading receiver with 334 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
The Mean Green, who climbed to No. 20 in the latest Associated Press, also had the Special Teams Player of the Week award go to Nguma, who went made his only field goal attempt of the day from 27 yards out and went 7-for-7 on extra points to extend his perfect start to his career to 124 consecutive makes on point-after attempts. He needs 10 more to tie Ethan Mooney for second on the program's all-time list of consecutive makes.
UNT is preparing to play in its first American Conference Championship on Friday, when the Mean Green travel to New Orleans to face Tulane. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ABC.
