MOBILE, Alabama – The UNT men's basketball team defeated reigning Sun Belt regular season champion South Alabama on the road Sunday night, 58-57.
The Mean Green (8-3) were led in scoring by sophomore Je'Shawn Stevenson who scored a game-high 22 points, his fourth 20-point game of the year. North Texas is undefeated this year when Stevenson scores at least 20 points.
"There's nothing like a road win and this is a true road win again a really good team who is going to compete for a Sun Belt championship," said UNT head coach Daniyal Robinson. "(South Alabama) Coach (Richie) Riley is a really good coach and had them prepared. But our guys showed resiliency when (South Alabama) fought back in the second half."
The Jaguars (8-3) ran a zone for the entire 40-minute game, making it difficult for North Texas to get looks around the rim.
The Mean Green stretched their second half lead to double digits but saw it disappear during a stretch where they struggled to score.
UNT took the eventual 58-57 game-winning lead with a Stevenson free throw with 28 seconds remaining. In the game's final seconds UNT made two key defensive stops to secure the road win.
With Reece Robinson in foul trouble for most of the second half, junior Buddy Hammer Jr. stepped up big as he played a season-high 19 minutes and finished with a season-high seven points to go along with a steal and a block.
Junior Cole Franklin earned his first start of the year and matched his career high with two made 3-pointers.
UNT remains on the road as they next face Santa Clara in Santa Cruz, California, on Wednesday.
