SANTA CRUZ, California – The UNT men's basketball team fell to Santa Clara Wednesday night, 63-60, in a neutral site game at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, California.
The Mean Green (8-4) led for nearly 24 minutes and by as many as eight points early in the second half. They forced the Broncos (9-3) into a season high 21 turnovers — six more than any other game this season.
A second half scoring drought by UNT gave SCU a nine-point lead with four minutes to go but the Mean Green were still able to fight back by forcing turnovers and tied it at 60 with one minute remaining.
However, in that final minute North Texas didn't get the stop they needed and a 3-0 run by Santa Clara propelled them to the victory.
"Proud of our team's fight and effort," said head coach Daniyal Robinson. "That's a really good team (Santa Clara) over there that's going to compete for a conference championship. We're going to grow from this and get better. We still have a lot of room to grow."
The 21 turnovers UNT's defense forced on Wednesday was the most the Mean Green have forced against a DI opponent this year.
Junior Cole Franklin recorded a career-high six steals Wednesday as the Mean Green as a team picked the Broncos' pocket 13 times, their most against a DI opponent this season.
Led by David Terrell Jr.'s season high 16 points, three UNT players scored in double figures on the night. Senior Dylan Arnett scored 12 points, and his 700th career point, and sophomore Je'Shawn Stevenson was once again in double figures as he finished with 11. It was his 10th game with 10 or more points this season.
Wednesday was North Texas' seventh game this year decided by three points or less or that went into overtime. They are now 5-2 in such games.
The Mean Green return home on Monday as they host USAO at 1 p.m. CT at the Super Pit.
