DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team ended its non-conference slate Monday afternoon at the Super Pit with a 109-56 win over University Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
It is both the Mean Green's (9-4) largest margin of victory and the first time they have scored 100 or more points in a game in five seasons.
North Texas' nine non-conference wins this year are its most since 2018.
"It was great to finish the non-conference on a high note and get a home win," said head coach Daniyal Robinson of his team that was playing their first home game in 20 days. "It was also great we got to get everyone in and get extended run as we head into conference play."
All 11 active UNT players played at least 10 minutes on Monday with five scoring in double figures. Sophomore Je'Shawn Stevenson and junior David Terrell Jr. led the way with 16 points each. It was Terrell's second consecutive game scoring 16 points and Stevenson has now scored in double figures in 11 of North Texas' 13 games so far.
Junior Cole Franklin and freshman EJ Horton each finished with a season high 12 points and senior Josiah Shackleford also added 12 points off the bench and a season high eight rebounds.
Seven different Mean Green players knocked down a 3-pointer on Monday as they finished with a season high 12 makes from beyond the arc.
After turning the ball over 11 times in the first half the Mean Green led by just 18 at the midway point. But they cleaned it up in the second half as they had zero turnovers in the final 20 minutes of the game and stretched their lead out.
On the flip side, UNT's defense forced the Drovers (5-8), who compete at the NAIA level, into 24 turnovers. The Mean Green have now forced its last two opponents into a combined 45 turnovers and have forced three teams into 20 or more turnovers.
The Mean Green won't play again for 10 days but open league play on the road at the reigning champ, Memphis Tigers, on Dec. 31.
