Mean Green Begin Conference Play Wednesday At Memphis

MEMPHIS – The UNT men's basketball team begins conference play on Wednesday as they travel to reigning American Conference champion Memphis.
The Mean Green (9-4) and Tigers (5-7) are scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. CT from the FedExForum in Memphis. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on ESPN2.
Wednesday will be the 26th all-time meeting between UNT and Memphis. They've split their last two matchups, but the Tigers own the series history 18-7. Wednesday, the Mean Green will be aiming for their first road win over Memphis since Jan. 3, 1970.
Following the conference opener, UNT returns to the Super Pit to host Tulsa on Sunday and begin a two-game home stand.

UNT has had six games this year decided by three points or less. No team in the nation has had more games decided by one possession or less. The Mean Green are 4-2 in such games. UNT freshman guard EJ Horton on Monday was named the American Conference Freshman of the Week. Horton matched his single game season high with 12 points and added a season high three assists in the Mean Green's 109-56 win. Horton also had a dunk that was featured on SportsCenter Top 10 plays at No. 3. Horton is the first UNT freshman ever to earn the American Conference weekly honor. UNT joined the league in 2023. Horton is the first UNT freshman to be named to a conference freshman of the week honor (in any league) since Aaron Scott five years ago in Conference USA during the 2021-22 season.

North Texas forward Dylan Arnett enters Wednesday as the only player in the American Conference averaging 8.0+ points per game, 6.0+ rebounds per game, 1.0+ assists per game, 1.0+ blocks per game and 1.0+ steals per game.
209 IN THE NON-CONFERENCE
UNT sophomore guard Je'Shawn Stevenson scored 209 points during the non-conference slate of the Mean Green's schedule this year. He is the first North Texas player to score 200+ points in non-conference since Roosevelt Smart in 2017 (229). Smart broke the single season program record for points that year with 742. Stevenson's 209 points in the non-conference ranked first among American Conference players classified as sophomores or younger and 25th in the nation among sophomores or younger.
DEFENSE TRAVELS
UNT's defense this year has actually been better on the road than at home. In road and neutral site games (5 games), UNT's defense is holding opponents to .957 points per possession whereas home contests (7 games) they are giving up 1.02 points per possession. UNT's defensive efficiency in road/neutral site games ranks 24th in the nation whereas at home it ranks 133rd. UNT's defense on the road is holding opponents to 29.1% shooting from 3 (ranks 33rd in the nation) and 47.1 percent from 2 (ranks 35th in the nation.
