IRVING, Texas - The American Conference released its all-conference team on Tuesday, and the list of honorees was dominated by the No. 20 Mean Green, including three superlative awards and the entire offensive line making the list.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year after his record-setting regular season, which included a single-game American record 608 passing yards in a win over Charlotte. In his 12 games this season, Mestemaker has passed for an American freshman record 3,835 yards to go with 29 touchdowns and just four interceptions while completing better than 70% of his passes. He's also rushed for five scores.
Freshman running back Caleb Hawkins, who has only played 11 games and seen significant action in just 10, was named the league's Rookie of the Year after a remarkable freshman campaign that has seen him rush for 1,236 yards and lead the nation with 23 rushing touchdowns and 26 overall touchdowns. In his last four games alone, Hawkins has rushed for 16 touchdowns. He's also the team's fifth-leading receiver with 334 yards on 28 catches and three touchdowns.Â
Third-year head coach Eric Morris was also named Coach of the Year after leading the Mean Green to their best season in program history with the first 11-win campaign in program history and the first national ranking since 1959 while having UNT on the precipice of its first American Conference championship and a possible College Football Playoff berth.
The Mean Green (11-1, 7-1 American) had four players land on the First Team, including Mestemaker and Hawkins, who were joined by sophomore wide receiver Wyatt Young and senior offensive lineman Gabe Blair. Through 12 games, Young has 62 catches for 1,203 yards and 10 receiving scores while also adding a rushing touchdown. Young is currently second on the program's all-time single-season yardage list and just 119 yards shy of tying the program record of 1,322 yards held by Casey Fitzgerald since 2007. He also set a new American Conference record for single-game receiving with his 295-yard effort against Rice.
Blair leads the UNT offensive line contingency with his first-team selection after leading the way for the nation's top scoring offense with the most rushing touchdowns in the country (44). He was joined by second-team selections Braydon Nelson and Tay Yanta II and third-teamers Jimto Obidegwu and Johnny Dickson III.
Also on the Second Team were junior linebacker Ethan Wesloski and senior cornerback David Fisher. Wesloski leads the team with 97 tackles, including 50 solo stops, and a team-high 9.0 tackles for loss. He also has 1.5 sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery to spearhead a Mean Green defense that leads the nation with 25 forced turnovers that have turned into 118 offensive points. Fisher, one of several transfers who came to Denton from Sam Houston State with first-year defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity, has 42 tackles, with 3.0 tackles for loss, an interception and a team-high seven pass breakups.
Joining Obidegwu and Dickson III on the Third Team were senior linebacker Trey Fields, who is second on the team with 92 tackles and a team-high three fumble recoveries, and senior safety Will Jones II, who has 60 tackles to go with two interceptions, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Mean Green will continue their season on Friday night when they take on Tulane for the American championship at 7 p.m., in New Orleans. The game will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
