Mestemaker named Player of the Year, Hawkins earns Offensive Freshman of the Year
DALLAS – The UNT football program continued its onslaught of awards Tuesday, garnering a total of eight honors from Dave Campbell's Texas Football (DCTF) on their All-Texas teams.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Drew Mestemaker was named the DCTF Offensive Player of the Year to add to his long list of accolades while true freshman running back Caleb Hawkins earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
In addition, both Mestemaker and Hawkins earned First Team All-Texas honors along with offensive teammates OL Gabe Blair and WR Wyatt Young to give the Mean Green four players on the First Team offense, the most of any team in the state.
On the Second Team, OL Tay Yanta II and CB David Fisher both received honors. In total, the Mean Green earned six All-Texas team selections, the third-most of any team in the state and the most of any non-A4 program.
The Mean Green finished the regular season with a program record 11 wins and earned a spot in the American Championship game for the first time in program history. UNT's offense leads the nation in both scoring and total offense while also sitting in the top 10 in turnover margin and turnovers forced.
UNT will close out its season December 27 when they travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to take on San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl at 3:45 PM CT on ESPN.
