Grand Reserve Golf Course | Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
The UNT women's golf team is traveling to the tropics to open the spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande.Â
Â
THE EVENT: Grand Reserve Golf Course will play as a par-72 course at 6,305 yards. The teams will play 18 holes each day with 6:30 a.m., shotgun starts on Sunday and Monday and a final-round shotgun start on Tuesday at 5:30 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 18 teams participating in the tournament, including 12 teams in the top 50 nationally and six top-20 squads: No. 2 Arkansas, No. 20 Auburn, Furman, No. 37 Georgia Southern, No. 32 Iowa State, No. 30 Kansas State, Kent State, No. 16 LSU, No. 22 Michigan State, No. 42 Minnesota, North Florida, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 19 Ole Miss, No. 33 Purdue, UNCW, UNT, UTSA and No. 15 Vanderbilt.
Â

Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on Golfstat. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
 Â
AKERS SAYS: "The team is certainly excited to travel to Puerto Rico to begin our spring season," head coach Michael Akers said. The weather will be warm and conditions will be different than we have faced in practice. The field is loaded with good teams so we have an opportunity to pick up some great wins. This event helps with recruiting. Our program has so much going for it and selling a top tournament schedule is important. I have tried to get into this event for years. The new coach at Purdue and I are friends, and we had a discussion at The Bruzzy event that led to an invitation.
"I am very happy to have Shreya back in the lineup (after an injury in the fall). We were conservative with her leading up to this event. She has had some very nice rounds in qualifying. I think we have a solid starting five this event."
MOVING UP: UNT has made significant strides since Akers took over eight years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are now consistently ranked in the top 50 nationally and have qualified for four straight NCAA Regionals - the only active AAC team with at least four consecutive NCAA berths.
UP NEXT: The Mean Green will next head down I-45 to play in The Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on Feb. 24-25.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to have the new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, which is a $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
