The Mean Green set four more school records at the conference meet
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jake Parchman won the men's weight throw to lead the UNT track and field teams at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Parchman narrowly missed the podium last season in a fourth place finish, but made his way to the top in his final season of eligibility. He became UNT's first conference champion in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 21.01 meters.
He led the men's team to fourth place in the team standings with 81 points, marking the best placement at the conference indoor meet since the 2021 season. The Mean Green women placed seventh collecting 44 points. As a whole, North Texas had 12 individuals earn all-conference honors in 10 events over the weekend.
"I couldn't be prouder of this team's performance at the conference meet," head coach Doug Marshall said. "Every athlete showed heart, determination, and resilience — pushing themselves to the limit and lifting each other up along the way. We came together not just as teammates, but as a family, and that's what truly defines our success. We will continue to improve, get healthy, and prepare for a strong outdoor season."
In addition to Parchman's school record, Hendrick Hundl reset the men's 60-meter hurdles record in both of his races. The junior began his meet with a 7.87 in the prelims that topped the 7.88 he posted at the Red Raider Invite on Jan. 24. He went on to blow that record away with a 7.76 to place second in the finals Saturday afternoon.
Chase Lehr also claimed a school record and a runner-up finish in the 800 meters for the men's squad. The sophomore mid-distance runner clocked a 1:49.12 in the finals to take down the previous record of 1:49.93 that he had neared on multiple occasions this season.
The Mean Green had a very impressive first day of competition that began with Phil Cotton setting the tone with a pair of PR's in the 60 meters and long jump that energized the team. Cotton led the men's heptathlon after Friday's events and would go on to place fifth.
Fabrienne Foster continued the weight throw success for North Texas as she placed second with a personal-best throw of 19.09 meters. True freshman Ava Roberts took third in the women's shot put on Saturday, also posting a personal best in her conference debut.
The Mean Green put four sprinters in the men's 60-meter final, placing second, third, fifth and sixth in the prelims Friday afternoon. They would nearly finish the exact same in the finals with Julian Forde taking second with a season-best time of 6.64, followed by Jaylen Washington in third at 6.68. Jared Johnson placed fifth in his season debut, while Derrick Warren crossed in seventh place. Trezeguet Taylor made it five sprinters to earn points for North Texas in the event as she placed fifth in the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.44.
Warren found his way to the podium in the long jump Friday evening as the runner-up in the event. He went a season best 7.41 meters on his fifth jump to vault into second place behind UTSA's Christiaan Le Roux. On the women's side, Brya Brewer made her season debut for UNT in the women's and took third in the women's triple jump.
The men's team found success in the relay events, highlighted by a school record in the DMR. The combination of Joseph Wienen, Hunter Hendry, Makenden Brown and Lehr clocked a 9:57.26 in a fourth-place finish. The Mean Green closed out the meet with a third-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:11.72.
Holding the No. 12 time in the nation in the 60 meters, Washington will await his fate on a potential berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The rest of the Mean Green will prepare to kick off the outdoor season March 21-22 in Fort Worth at the TCU Alumni Invite.
