DENTON, Texas — UNT women's basketball (25-8) will take on an old Sun Belt Conference foe in the WNIT Super 16 Thursday at 6 p.m. when it tips off versus Troy at Trojan Arena.
The teams met every year from 2006 to 2013, which was the last matchup between the schools. UNT holds a 10-4 lead in the series, despite the Trojans winning the most recent meeting on Feb. 16, 2013.
The winner on Thursday will advance to the 'Great 8' round of the tournament to face the winner of Washington State and North Dakota State.
UNT defeated UT Arlington, 78-67, Monday night behind five players scoring in double figures. A 20-0 run in the second quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Mean Green reached 25 wins for the first time in program history.
Troy advanced to the third round by beating Chattanooga, 85-72, at home on Monday night. The Trojans improved to 21-13 on the season and are 11-2 on their home floor.
Thursday's game will feature a pair of players averaging double doubles on the season. Tommisha Lampkin leads North Texas with 16.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, while Troy's Zay Dyer has posted 13.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. Dyer is the catalyst for a Trojan team that is the top rebounding team in the country grabbing over 49 rebounds per game.
The matchup will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Varsity Network App with Zac Babb on the call.
