IRVING, Texas - The UNT women's golf team had three players selected to the American Athletic Conference All-Conference team, the league announced on Tuesday.
The Mean Green had the second-most players selected to the team behind conference champion Tulsa, as selections were made by taking the top-10 nationally ranked players in the conference and adding players not in that group who finished in the top seven at the conference tournament last week.
Senior Malisone Chanthapanya, junior Mason Lewis and sophomore Bouquet Subsomboon all made the team based on their national rankings, and Chanthapanya and Subsomboon both made their first appearances on the postseason team.
"I am very proud to see Mason, Mali and Bouquet honored by the American Athletic Conference today," head coach Michael Akers said. "They all played solid this year and all stepped up to lead us at various tournaments. These three student-athletes are also amazing In the classroom and represent UNT in a positive manner on and off the course."
Lewis led the team with a season stroke average of 73.17, narrowly edging out Subsomboon by just three strokes over the course of the season and had the team's season-low round of 67 at the Chevron Collegiate back in February. She posted four top-15 finishes and led the team at last week's conference championship by tying for ninth. She made the All-AAC team last year based off her finish at the conference championship but was an automatic selection this year based on national ranking.
"Mason has improved every year with us and her development has been fun to watch," Akers said. "We knew she would elevate, as most do in our program. It is very special to have Mason with us as her sister played for the Mean Green and both her parents attended UNT."
Subsomboon had a stroke average of 73.30 this year, good for second on the team, and had four top-20 finishes, highlighted by her T7 showing at the season-opening Powercat Classic.
"Bouquet is extremely talented and has a very smooth swing and great touch around the greens," Akers said. "She has the personality to play golf at the next level. I could not be more pleased to have Bouquet on our team."
Chanthapanya made the most of her one season with the Mean Green after transferring from NAIA power Texas Wesleyan, where she was selected to multiple All-American teams. She was third on the team with a 73.85 season stroke average and had five top-25 showings, highlighted by her T7 finish at the season-opening Powercat Classic. She also had the team's best round at the conference championship, when she fired a final-round 69.
"Mali was a huge late addition to our program and certainly proved she belongs in DI," Akers said. "Her work ethic is one of the best I have ever seen. Mali deserves success because she is extremely dedicated."
