Mean Green Set to Host Sam Houston Sunday Night
8/16/2025 9:42:00 AM | Women's Soccer
DENTON - The UNT soccer team will play its second home match of the young season on Sunday night, when the Mean Green host Sam Houston at 7 p.m., and will hope to bounce back from a season-opening loss.
The Mean Green (0-1-0) dropped their opener, 2-1, to Incarnate Word, in a match that featured a two-plus hour lightning delay and saw UNT fire off 38 shots to UIW's six.
Only one of those 38 shots found the back of the net, when freshman Payton Annis hit a brilliant left-footer from just outside the box to even the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute. She became the second legacy player in program history and the first to score a goal, as her mom, Caree Ridenour, starred for the Mean Green from 2001-04.
Sam Houston (0-0-1) comes to town after a 1-1 season-opening tie at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night. The Mean Green hold a 6-1-0 series advantage over the Bearkats in the all-time series, and the teams haven't met since 2013, when UNT scored a 3-0 win.
