The former Mean Green golfer paid off his first-round 59 with an individual title
INDIANAPOLIS — Former UNT men's golf Sebastian Munoz outlasted Jon Rahm in a sudden-death playoff at LIV Golf Indianapolis to capture his first LIV individual title Sunday at The Club at Chatham Hills.
Munoz was the talk of the golf world on Friday after he posted a first-round 59, marking the third sub-60 round in LIV Golf history, joining Torque GC teammate Joaquin Niemann and two-time major champion Bryson DeChambeau. His remarkable day included 14 birdies, including a run of 12 birdies in 13 holes following a double bogey on the fifth hole. He is the first player in professional golf history to post a round of 59 with a double bogey.
After jumping out to the early lead with his 12-under-par round, Munoz sat atop the leaderboard for nearly the entire tournament. Rahm took a late lead in Sunday's final round after posting a 60 to enter the clubhouse at 22-under, while Munoz was on the 17th hole at 20-under. Consecutive birdies to end his round capped off by a 10-foot putt on the 18th green tied Rahm and forced a sudden-death playoff.
The duo went back to the 18th hole where Munoz recorded his 30th birdie of the tournament to best Rahm's par. LIV Golf Indianapolis marks the third tournament title for Munoz in his professional career having won once on the PGA Tour in 2019 and once on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Torque GC cruised to a dominant win in the team race, clearing Legion XIII by 10 strokes. In addition to Munoz, Torque teammates Niemann and fellow Mean Green legend Carlos Ortiz joined Munoz in the top five, tying for fourth place at 17-under-par.
With the win, Munoz jumped to fourth place in the final individual standings for the LIV regular season after entering the week in seventh. The LIV season will conclude next weekend with the team championship in Detroit, Michigan.
