Â
Dean Dillon, born March 26, 1955, in Lake City, TN, began playing guitar at seven and was performing by 15. After hitchhiking to Nashville in the early '70s, he briefly recorded with Sun Records before landing a role as Hank Williams in Opryland's Country Music Show, USA. That gig led to his first publishing deal, and in 1979 he scored his first No. 1 hit with "Lying Here in Love with You."
Â
From 1979-1983, Dillon charted eight times as a recording artist and wrote hits for others, including George Jones' No. 1 "Tennessee Whiskey" and George Strait's "Nobody in His Right Mind Would've Left Her." After a five-year hiatus to focus on songwriting, he enjoyed major success with Strait, who recorded five of his songs between 1981–1988. Dillon later released albums on Capitol and Atlantic, including Out of Your Mind (1991), praised for its traditional sound.
Â
Dillon was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. He has written for Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Lee Ann Womack, and especially George Strait—penning or co-writing 76 songs for him, including 19 singles, 11 of which went No. 1, such as "Marina del Rey," "The Chair," "Easy Come, Easy Go," and "The Best Day." His work blends catchy melodies with traditional country storytelling, shaping Strait's signature style.
Â
Awards include the 1985 Billboard Country Music Artist of the Year, multiple CMA Triple Play Awards, three Grammy nominations, and the 2013 BMI Icon Award.
Â
Dean Dillon live on October 8 will be the first of several concerts for UNT Athletics as part of the Mean Green Concert Series. For questions, please contact the UNT Ticket Office at 940-565-2527 or via email at ticketoffice@unt.edu. Â
