Volleyball Sweeps UAPB, Extends Winning Streak to Six

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Mean Green volleyball swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-12) at the Texan Classic on Friday afternoon at Wisdom Gym.
UNT (9-2) won its first-ever meeting with the Lady Lions (0-11) and extended its winning streak to six matches, tying the ninth-longest spell in program history.
Freshman Dakota Mitchell recorded six service aces which ties the UNT record for the most in the 25-point rally scoring era, which began in 2008. Fellow first-year Sidney Soria led the match with 22 assists while freshman defensive specialist Alessandra Romo posted a team-best 10 digs.
The freshman trio of Mitchell, Soria and Romo have appeared in all 41 sets for the Mean Green this season, the Indiana Hoosiers are the only other Division I team to have three or more true freshmen appear in every set this season.
North Texas opened the match with a furious 8-0 run to take control of the first set and were led to a 25-10 win by Bedell and Loredana Fouonji who each finished the frame with four kills.
The second set was much more contentious as UAPB led 9-4 in the opening moments before the Mean Green flipped the frame at 19-19 and closed with a six-point run.
In the third, Mitchell played a significant role as she collected four of her six aces as UNT posted a 10-1 run to close out the sweep.
The Mean Green face hosts Tarleton State (5-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wisdom Gym on WAC International.
