DENTON - The UNT soccer team scored less than a minute into Thursday's conference home opener, but gave up a game-winning penalty kick in the 73rd minute, as the Mean Green fell 3-2 in the first of a two-match homestand this weekend in Denton.
Junior captain Mia Bernard got things started immediately on a first-minute goal off an assist from sophomore Emma King before Charlotte (5-4-0, 1-1-0) came back and scored in the 12th and 29th minutes to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Senior forward Summer Brown drew a foul in the box to set up senior captain Rachel Roebuck's second penalty kick conversion of the season in the 63rd minute to even things up at 2-2, before Charlotte answered 10 minutes later with a penalty kick of its own by Amelia Brown as the deciding margin.
"It's another tough loss for us," UNT head coach John Hedlund said. "The girls played their hearts out, and I thought the momentum shifted our way in the second half. We just need a little luck to start going our way, but even though we're not happy with the result I'm proud of the girls' effort tonight."
Sophomore forward Claire Niedermeier, who led UNT (4-7-1, 0-2-0) with four shots on the night, was a constant force in Charlotte's back end but couldn't find the back of the net.
"We definitely connected well," Niedermeier said. "We had a lot of good opportunities and worked well as a team together and stayed positive. We just need to take that into Sunday."
UNT will stay at home for a 1 p.m., kick as the Mean Green will host East Carolina (3-4-2, 1-1-0) on Sunday.
