DENTON, Texas — The UNT soccer team came up short on Sunday in another chance to win its first American conference game of the season, as the Mean Green fell to East Carolina 2-0 to drop their conference record to 0-3.
The Mean Green (4-8-1, 0-3-0), which entered the contest ranked in the top 20 nationally and second in the conference in shots per game, were outshot by the Pirates (4-4-2, 2-1-0) by a tally of 16-9 and gave up a goal in each half while struggling to create chances of their own.
UNT's best chance came in the 64th minute when the ball deflected to sophomore Claire Niedermeier near the 6-yard box with an open net in front of her but her shot sailed high. Four minutes later, the Pirates found the back of the net, beating UNT keeper Hicks Bishop for their second and final goal of the day.
"Well, I like the way my team came out in the second half and fought to the very end," head coach John Hedlund said. "We took the game to them and had some really great chances in front of their goal. Unfortunately, the ball sailed over the crossbar. ECU is a good team that won our conference tournament last year but them having the entire week off and us playing Charlotte on Thursday was definitely a disadvantage towards us. But give our players credit, they never quit, and I just know the goals will eventually come our way."
UNT will now hit the road for two straight, as the Mean Green will travel to take on Temple on Thursday night in Philadelphia at 6 p.m., before traveling to face No. 11 Memphis a week later on Oct. 9. UNT will return home on Oct. 12, to face Tulsa at 1 p.m.
