PHILADELPHIA — The UNT soccer team were happy to see the calendar flip to October, and after a rough month in September earned its first American conference win of the season in its first game in October with a 1-0 road shutout of Temple on Thursday night.
The Mean Green (5-8-1, 1-3-0) outshot Temple, doubled the Owls' shots on goal, and finally made one count in the 79th minute on a long ball into the box from freshman Lillian Vandiver connected with head of junior captain Mia Bernard for her team-best fifth goal of the season.
While Bernard made good on the only attempt that ended up mattering, the Mean Green defense came up big all night, as junior goalkeeper Alina Arneth made her return to the lineup after missing two games to injury and finished the night with four saves for her second clean sheet of the season. She also got some key assists from her defenders on a couple of chaotic set pieces that the Mean Green turned away with the help of Abi Major and Rachel Roebuck.
UNT, which has dealt with numerous injuries this season and is starting to get healthy again, will now have a week to rest up before a key road matchup at Memphis, which is currently ranked 11th in the country, on Thursday, Oct. 9.
