Mean Green Fall at No. 8 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The UNT soccer team could not have asked for a better start to their match on Thursday night against the nation's eighth-ranked team, the Memphis Tigers.
After withstanding an early barrage of Memphis' attack, UNT's Claire Niedermeier was able to corral a loose ball from the Memphis goalkeeper and turn and fire from a sharp angle along the goal line to open the night's scoring in UNT's favor before Memphis roared back to win 4-1 and extend its 35-match home unbeaten streak.
Niedermeier's goal in the 14th minute was the first for UNT (5-9-1, 1-4-0) against a ranked team on the road since Sept. 20, 2015, when the Mean Green lost 2-1 at No. 5 Texas A&M. It was her fourth goal of the year.
After Niedermeier scored, junior goalkeeper Alina Arneth had a couple of more highlight reel saves to keep the Mean Green in front before Memphis (11-0-2, 5-0-1) equalized in the 30th minute and then took the lead one minute later on a converted penalty kick to send the game to half with a 2-1 Memphis advantage. Arneth finished the night with a career-high six saves.
The Tigers, who outshot UNT 20-8 on the night, found the back of the net two more times in the second half, in the 70th and 74th minutes, for the final margin.
"I'm proud of my starters tonight," head coach John Hedlund said. "They battled with basically 20 minutes left in the game down 2-1, and that's counting a very questionable penalty kick given by the referee. Unfortunately, we just ran out of gas at the end. But I'm proud of the effort and fight tonight against the No. 8 team in the country."
UNT will now return home for its next two with a 1 p.m. kickoff slated for Sunday against Tulsa (7-4-4, 2-2-2), who is coming off a 1-0 win over UAB on Thursday night.
