Volleyball Falls to Charlotte

DENTON – Mean Green volleyball suffered a 3-0 (17-25, 23-25, 22-25) loss to Charlotte in its opening American Conference match on Friday at the UNT Volleyball Center.
UNT (10-3, 0-1) were held to its lowest hitting percentage mark of the season (.092) while the 49ers (10-3, 1-0) claimed its first win in the series since Oct. 25, 2015. Junior Loredana Fouonji was the lone double-digit point scorer for the Mean Green as she tallied 11.5 points with a team high eight kills and five blocks.
The first set was hotly contested as a kill from Jahniya Jackson and subsequent ace from Sidney Soria squared the set at 8-8. The 49ers answered with eight unanswered points for a commanding lead that the Mean Green were unable to overcome, dropping the first set, 25-17.
Despite never holding a lead in the second set, North Texas tied the frame on four occasions including at 21-21 with a kill from sophomore Reagan Bedell. Facing set point, Fouonji teamed up with Lilly Croshaw for a combination block at 24-23 before Charlotte closed the second with a block of its own.
Down two sets, the Mean Green rattled off a six-point run in the opening moments of the third, to take a 7-4 lead. The 49ers wrestled the lead back but were stifled after a pair of late kills from senior Alexa Washington, at 21-21 and 22-22. UNT were unable to capitalize on the moments and dropped the third 25-22.
The loss snaps the Mean Green's seven-match winning streak.
