Women’s Basketball Reveals 2025-26 Nonconference Slate

The Mean Green will play 11 of 12 games in the DFW metroplex
DENTON, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team's 2025-26 nonconference slate was announced Thursday, featuring eight home games and four matchups with major-conference opponents, including a home contest against the Big 12's Oklahoma State.
Contrary to the previous two seasons of head coach Jason Burton's tenure, North Texas will remain local for most of the nonconference schedule, not leaving the state until a Dec. 14 contest at Illinois.
"We are giving North Texas fans, and women's basketball fans in general, the opportunity to see us play without leaving the metroplex in one our most competitive non-conference schedules to date," Burton said. "We constructed this schedule with some early home games and two non-Division I schools to give this group of new players an opportunity to gel and gain some confidence at home before hitting the road for a tough stretch against some of the best teams in the country. In order to improve our NET Ranking, we are going to have to keep playing tougher competition and that's what you see with our four Power Four opponents, along with Oral Roberts and Abilene Christian that are both coming off 20-win seasons. We need to see our Mean Green fans out in full force this season to help us continue to make the Super Pit one of the toughest places in the country to play."
North Texas begins the season with four consecutive home games, opening against Oklahoma Christian on Nov. 3. Grambling State will return to Denton for the second time in three seasons on Nov. 7, before a Nov. 13 contest with Nelson University. The four-game home stand concludes Nov. 19 when Abilene Christian plays in The Super Pit for the first time since 2013.
The first Power Four opponent for the Mean Green will be metroplex rival, SMU, on Nov. 22 in Dallas. The teams have met three times over the last two seasons with North Texas sweeping the series in the 2023-24 campaign and SMU taking last year's matchup at The Super Pit.
Following the first road game of the season, UNT will head to Frisco for the Hoopfest Women's Basketball Challenge taking place at the Comerica Center over the Thanksgiving holiday. North Texas will play Saint Mary's on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. CT, followed by a matchup with Texas Tech on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT, as well. It will be the first meeting with the Red Raiders since 2001.
Then, North Texas will host the biggest game of its home nonconference slate when Oklahoma State comes to The Super Pit on Dec. 3. The Cowgirls last came to Denton in 2020 and are coming off a 25-win season that saw them appear in the AP Top 25 and earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
UNT will remain at home to host Texas Southern on Dec. 6, before its trip to Champaign to take on the Fighting Illini out of the Big Ten for just the second time in program history. The nonconference schedule will conclude with home games against Oral Roberts on Dec. 18 and Santa Clara on Dec. 21.
The remainder of UNT's 2025-26 schedule will be revealed by the American Conference at a later date.
