DENTON – The UNT women's golf team finished the Sam Golden Invitational on Tuesday tied for second as they shot a 278 (-10) over the two day three-round season opening tournament, which they hosted at the Oakmont Country Club in Corinth.
North Texas' score at the Sam Golden was its second-best 54-hole score versus par in program history.
"It was a very successful event for us," said head coach Michael Akers. "We are grateful to the Golden family for sponsoring our tournament and for watching every round."
Mean Green junior Bouquet Subsomboon was consistently atop the player leaderboard over the three rounds and finished a career-high second overall as she shot a career best 206 (-10). Subsomboon tied the program record for lowest 36 holes versus par (-8) with Audrey Tan who also shot a -8 at the UCF Challenge three years ago.
The Mean Green entered the final round on Tuesday in fifth place but were able to move up three spots propelled by freshman Victoria Georgieva who shot a third-round tournament-best 66 (-6). The freshman struggled over her first 36 holes of the tournament, shooting a 150 (+6) and sitting in 66th place. But on Tuesday she birdied six straight holes to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 216 (E) and lead her Mean Green team to the top two finish. Georgieva finished tied for 41st out of 72 competitors.
North Texas senior Mallorie Luitwieler finished in a tie for eighth on the player leaderboard. It's the highest she's ever finished a tournament as she shot a career-best 209 (-7). Luitwieler opened the Sam Golden with a 68 in the first round, following it up with 69 in round two and finishing on Tuesday with a 72.
"Mallorie played incredible on the first day which was cool since it was her birthday," Akers said. "I'm not surprised by Bouquet's runner-up performance. She can really go low. Vicky really broke out in the final round. Her six birdies in a row was special. She lipped out multiple putts on her final 5 holes or she would have broken the school record."
"We will begin preparing for Prairie Dunes on Thursday," he added.
Next up for UNT is the OU Intercollegiate Presented by PDI at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas, starting Oct. 7
