HUTCHINSON, Kansas – Coming off a successful season opening tournament, the UNT women's golf team is back in action on Monday as they compete in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Presented by PDI, hosted at the historic Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The two-day tournament will have a shotgun start, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. CT. This will be the first-ever women's collegiate tournament held at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
"We are very grateful to have the opportunity to play Prairie Dunes," said Mean Green head coach Michael Akers. "This event is special to us for multiple reasons. My assistant and I are both from Kansas, so we grew up knowing the reputation of the course. The course was designed by Perry Maxwell, which is also special because Perry was related to our donor Bruzzy Westheimer."
The 18-hole Prairie Dunes course was completed in 1957 and since has hosted USGA Tournaments such as the U.S. Women's Open and the 2014 NCAA DI Men's Championship.
This week the historic course will set up as a par 70, playing 6,005 yards.
This Mean Green, who shot their second-best 54-hole score in program history last month at the Sam Golden Invitational with a 278 (-10) and placed second overall in the team leaderboard, take on a deep field at Prairie Dunes this week that features two teams ranked in the Women's Golf Coaches Association top-25, with three more receiving votes.
The 14-team field includes Baylor, Florida, Iowa, Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. UNT will also compete this week against fellow American Conference opponents Tulsa and Wichita State. In the Sam Golden Invitational last month North Texas finished ahead of K-State and Nebraska.
"There are some very solid teams at this event, which gives us the opportunity to strengthen our national ranking," Akers said. "OU has been kind to us over the years with invitations and we appreciate them. The practice round will be very important for us to form a plan. We were able to play the course last year on the drive up to K-State so most of our starters have seen the course. We have played Maridoe multiple times in practice which has certainly been good."
In the Sam Golden Invitational last month, UNT junior Bouquet Subsomboon had her best ever finish as she came in second on the individual leaderboard as she shot a career-best 206 (-10). Subsomboon tied the program record for lowest 36 holes versus par (-8).
North Texas senior Mallorie Luitwieler also had her best career finish at the Same Golden Invitational as she came in eighth and shot a career-best 209 (-7).
