BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four Mean Green players reached double-digit points as the UNT's women's basketball team (11-8, 5-2 American) defeated UAB, 72-59, Tuesday night at Bartow Arena.
"They are a team that's capable of filling it up and scoring in bunches," head coach Jason Burton said. "To be able to hold them to 59 points tonight is a great job by our defense again."
Cherie Spencer led the charge in what was the best performance of her young career. The true freshman set a new career high with 16 points, including 14 in the first half alone, and went 7-of-12 from the floor while adding four assists and five steals. Aysia Proctor then carried the load in the second half, tallying 10 of her 13 points over the final 20 minutes. She knocked down 3-of-6 shots from behind the arc and has now scored 10+ points in all seven conference games.
North Texas took control of the game by dominating the possession battle, hauling in 20 offensive rebounds and turning the Blazers over 20 times for 31 points. That effort was aided by Megan Nestor, who came up just shy of her 11th double double of the season with nine points and 15 rebounds. Notably, she recorded all but one of her boards in the game's second half.
The UNT offense was effective from both inside and out on Tuesday night, sinking seven of its 15 three-point attempts and racking up 32 points in the paint. As a result, UNT ended the night with its second-highest point total in a road game this season.
The Mean Green return to The Super Pit on Saturday for another American Conference matchup against Tulsa. The game is set for 2 p.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN+.
