DENTON, Texas – Megan Nestor put together another historic performance Friday afternoon at the Super Pit, but the UNT women's basketball team (11-9, 5-3 American) ultimately dropped a close contest to Tulsa, 57-53.
Nestor continued her run as one of the country's most dominant inside forces, recording 19 points, 27 rebounds and a pair of blocks in just 26 minutes played. The 27 boards now give Nestor the top two spots in both program and American Conference history for single-game rebounds, only ranking behind her 31-rebound outing against Texas Southern earlier this year. It also marked her third time grabbing 20+ rebounds in a game and her league-leading 11th double double of the season.
Through eight games against American competition, Nestor is averaging 13.6 points and 15.5 rebounds per game with six double doubles.
"Incredible game from [Nestor]," head coach Jason Burton said. "Talk about another NCAA-type record performance. You'd hope that comes in a win, so as a staff, we'll keep at it. We'll keep trying to figure some things out."
North Texas was in control for most of the afternoon as it led for 33:46 of game time and built an 11-point lead late in the second quarter. The Mean Green's defense was spectacular once again, allowing a season-low 18 points in the first half and holding their opponent to under 60 points for the third consecutive game. Tulsa was able to scrape out the victory, however, thanks to a 16-point, 10-rebound performance from Dora Toman and some timely shooting down the stretch.
UNT returns to action on Tuesday with a quick visit to UTSA before hosting Florida Atlantic next Saturday at the Super Pit. Tuesday's game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off and will be available to watch on ESPN+.
