SAN ANTONIO – The UNT women's basketball team nearly matched the largest comeback in program history but ultimately fell to UTSA, 66-64, Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.
North Texas (11-10, 5-4 American) trailed for most of the second half, including a 20-point deficit late in the third quarter, before a furious rally over the game's final 10 minutes pulled it back into the finish. The comeback effort was powered by 36 fourth-quarter points, UNT's highest total in a quarter since the season opener, and an impressive 5-for-5 shooting from behind the arc throughout the frame.
With under a minute remaining and UTSA clinging to a 63-61 edge, Mekhia Chase almost scraped out the victory as she forced a Roadrunner turnover and drained a three-pointer to put UNT in front by one. It proved to be a short lead, however, as UTSA's Damara Allen answered nine seconds later with the game's deciding basket.
Chase had the best performance of her first season at the Division I level, scoring a career-high 20 points, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter, and shooting 7-of-9 from the field. She also set new career highs in both three-pointers made (4) and steals (3).
Andi Schissler and Megan Nestor were both impressive as well despite the loss. Schissler scored her most points of conference play with 12, all produced from behind the arc, while Nestor added 11 points and 14 rebounds for her 12th double double this season.
"We just finished the first nine [conference games] at 5-4," head coach Jason Burton said. "We've got to figure out how to get to a 7-2, 8-1, 9-0 type run on the back end of this and it starts with FAU."
UNT returns home Saturday for a rematch against Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. North Texas beat FAU, 81-56, in the American Conference opener back on Dec. 30. Saturday's game can be seen on ESPN+ or listened to through the Varsity Network App.
