DENTON, Texas – Megan Nestor posted her league-leading 13th double double of the season to push the UNT women's basketball team (12-10, 6-4 American) past Florida Atlantic, 67-49, Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
"I thought we really responded to what wasn't our best performance down in San Antonio a couple days ago," head coach Jason Burton said. "We came out and had two really, really good practices the last two days. That carried over into today."
With 10 points and 24 rebounds against the Owls, Nestor tallied her fourth 20-rebound game of the season. No other player in the country entered Saturday with more than two. Her four 20-rebound games are also the most in a single season by an American Conference player, surpassing South Florida's Alisia Jenkins' total of three in 2016.
Nestor has had a double double in eight of UNT's 10 conference games and is now averaging 12.6 points and 13.8 rebounds per game for the season. The 13.8 rebounds per game would be the highest season average in both program and conference history.
North Texas put together a team effort alongside Nestor's inside dominance as six total players scored at least eight points, including four in double digits. Cherie Spencer had an impactful afternoon with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists on 5-of-7 shooting, while Mekhia Chase added 10 points of her own as part of a team-high plus-28 when on the floor. Andi Schissler also made a pair of three-pointers for her second straight double-figure scoring game.
Defensively, North Texas limited FAU to just 49 points on 35% shooting and forced 20 turnovers. It marked UNT's fourth time this season holding its opponent to 50 points or less.
UNT looks to make it back-to-back wins when it visits Temple next Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on ESPN+ or listened to through the Varsity Network App.
