PHILADELPHIA – The UNT women's basketball team staged its biggest comeback of the season as it overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat Temple, 69-66, Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center.
Despite trailing by 13 points in the first half and 10 at the break, North Texas (13-10, 7-4 American) bounced back with 41 points over the game's final 20 minutes to secure the victory. The third quarter proved to be pivotal in UNT's comeback effort, scoring 28 points and sinking six three-pointers throughout the frame. It was all Megan Nestor from there, who accounted for all 13 UNT points in the fourth quarter and scored back-to-back buckets late to tie and then take the lead. She finished the afternoon with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four steals as part of her 14th double double of the season.
Four other North Texas players added at least eight points in Jazzy Owens-Barnett (9), Aysia Proctor (9), Andi Schissler (9) and Chania Price (8). Schissler sank three more triples, improving her to 9-of-14 from deep over the last 3 games, while Price also knocked down her second and third three-pointers of the year.
"We spread the wealth today," head coach Jason Burton said. "We've talked about that before, being a team that can have multiple players score the ball. I think that's what you saw today. You saw multiple players shoot the ball with confidence, and we're a much different team."
The Mean Green defense was spectacular once again, forcing 20 Temple turnovers and limiting it to just 10 points in the fourth quarter. Temple guard Kaylah Turner entered Saturday as the American Conference's leading scorer (17.8 PPG), but UNT held her to just nine points on the day.
UNT returns to the state of Texas for a meeting with league-leading Rice Tuesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. The game is slated for an 8 p.m. tip-off and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
