DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team travels to UTSA Wednesday afternoon aiming for its seventh road win in its past eight tries against American Conference opponents.
The Mean Green (11-9, 5-3 American) are looking to rebound from a close defeat to Tulsa their last time out and climb back up the league standings. Wednesday's game is pivotal in that effort, as UTSA enters the meeting just behind UNT with a 4-3 record in conference play. North Texas has performed well outside the Super Pit under head coach Jason Burton, going 15-7 in road conference games throughout his tenure.
Megan Nestor has continued to be one of the country's most dominant inside forces, tallying 19 points and 27 rebounds against the Golden Hurricane last Friday. The 27 rebounds are the second-most in a game by a Division I player this season, only ranking behind her own 31-rebound performance against Texas Southern on Dec. 6. Nestor now leads the nation in both total rebounds (265) and offensive rebounds (106) while also being the American's only player averaging a double double on the season.
In the backcourt, Aysia Proctor forms a dangerous duo alongside Nestor's physical paint presence. Through eight conference games, Proctor ranks second in the American with 16.8 points scored per game while making 44.7% of her three-point attempts.
North Texas holds a 23-15 lead over UTSA in a series that dates back to 1982 and has seen its past six matchups decided by an average margin of 3.2 points. The Roadrunners have beaten the Mean Green four games in a row and will try to extend that streak behind a defense that ranks first in the American in both points allowed (57.9) and opponent field goal percentage (.369).
The game is slated for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at the Convocation Center and will be available for streaming on ESPN+. Sam Kaman will also provide radio coverage through the Varsity Network App.
