Men's Basketball Travels To Tulsa Wednesday

TULSA – The UNT men's basketball team faces Tulsa on the road Wednesday night aiming for the program's first quad one win since March of 2023.
The Mean Green (12-8, 3-4) and Golden Hurricane (17-3, 5-2) are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT from Tulsa's Reynolds' Center. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield on KHYI 95.3 FM and on ESPN+.
Wednesday will be the second time UNT and Tulsa have met this month. The Mean Green beat the Golden Hurricane, 72-67, in Denton on Jan. 4. Sophomore North Texas guard Je'Shawn Stevenson scored a game-high 21 points in the home victory. A win Wednesday for North Texas would mark the program's first quad one victory since beating UAB in the 2023 NIT championship game. The Golden Hurricane enter Wednesday with a league leading No. 49 NET ranking.
Following Wednesday's game, North Texas returns home to host UAB on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. The game is the second half of a doubleheader with the Mean Green women's basketball team.
THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED
Wednesday will be the first time this year UNT will play a repeat opponent. UNT beat Tulsa on Jan. 4 in Denton, 72-67. They beat the Golden Hurricane on Jan. 4 behind a 21-point performance by Je'Shawn Stevenson. The sophomore was 4-8 from deep and 5-6 at the free throw line. UNT as a team shot 8-18 (44%) from 3-point range in the win while holding Tulsa to 4-14 (29%) shooting from deep. Furthermore, UNT only had eight turnovers, which Tulsa only scored 3 points off of. Tulsa had 13 turnovers, which UNT scored 12 points off of.
GOT 25 FROM THE BENCH
When UNT beat Tulsa, 72-67, on Jan. 4, the Mean Green got 25 points from their bench. UNT's bench outscored Tulsa's 25-12. Entering Wednesday it's still the most points the Mean Green bench has scored against a conference opponent and the third-most points the bench has scored since Will McClendon went down with a season ending injury on Nov. 12. UNT's Buddy Hammer Jr. came off the bench against Tulsa and scored eight points and had five rebounds in just 10 minutes. He became the first Mean Green player since Adam McCoy in 2008 to come off the bench and in less than 10 minutes score eight points and grab five rebounds. UNT's Josiah Shackleford came off the bench in the win over Tulsa and led the bench scoring with nine points. It remains Shackleford's highest scoring game against a league opponent this year.
TURNING OPPONENTS OVER
UNT's defense has forced its last nine opponents into an average of 17.5 turnovers per game. Five of those nine opponents' season high turnovers were against UNT. Tulsa's season high in turnovers entering Wednesday is 16 versus New Mexico State. The Mean Green on Jan. 4 turned the Golden Hurricane over 13 times. On the year, UNT's defense averages 15.7 forced turnovers per game, which leads the American and ranks 13th in the nation. UNT's defense forces a turnover on 22.0% of all defensive possessions. That ranks 8th in the nation. In conference, UNT has increased that percentage to 24.1% of all defensive possessions.
