TAMPA, Fla. – The UNT women's basketball team couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 77-61 loss to South Florida Saturday night in the Yuengling Center.
The Mean Green (7-7, 1-1 American) faced an uphill climb after USF took a 22-10 lead in the first quarter behind a 54% mark from the field shooting.
North Texas was able to make runs in the second and third quarter, but failed to cut the deficit lower than five points in either period. It wasn't until the 7:50 mark in the fourth quarter when UNT trimmed South Florida's lead to 65-61. However, the Bulls responded with a 6-0 run to regain control of the momentum.
Despite Aysia Proctor's best effort in the fourth, UNT couldn't put together another strong push as USF iced the game late. Proctor had seven points in the quarter, which came early on when she accounted for seven of the Mean Green's first nine in the period. She finished with 18 points to lead all players on the night.
Megan Nestor recorded her sixth double double of the season in the loss, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds.
North Texas will be back home for one game against East Carolina Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT before returning to the road as it continues a challenging slate to open American Conference play.
