ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. and SEATTLE - The UNT track and field team split into two groups over the weekend and had a pair of strong showings at the New Mexico Team Open and the UW Invite, which hosted the mid-distance and distance runners.
The Mean Green continued its trend started in the indoor season opener a couple of weeks ago by, once again, breaking five program records between the two sites.
In New Mexico, sophomore Trezeguet Taylor broke her own record in the 60 meters for the second straight meet with a winning time of 7.35 seconds. In the 400, two Mean Green women broke the program record while claiming a 1-2 finish, as Kendahl Tucker's 53.50 broke the six-year-old program record, but she was edged out by teammate Aariyana Williams' 52.79, which is now the program benchmark. In the women's 4x400 relay, the team of Lailah Hudson, Williams, C'Nai Childress and Tucker broke the program record for the second straight meet with a time of 3:41.13 to finish third.
The distance group had a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest, as well, as London Culbreath set a new record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:22.60 on Friday night, and Chase Lehr broke his own record, set last year, in the 800 with a time of 1:47.35.
"I'm very proud of the group this weekend for competing and being prepared through a tough week," director of track and field Doug Marshall said. "We only really had two days of prep (because of icy weather) and some were still stuck for those days but they stayed ready and mentally prepared. I'm extremely proud of the ones that came and broke records this weekend. Definitely going to stay hungry. We have a lot of work to do."
UNT also got a race win from Hendrick Hundl in the 60 hurdles with a time of 7.79 and a runner-up finish in the women's triple jump from Claire Spiller, who jumped 12.59 meters.
The Mean Green will be back in competition on Friday, as they travel to Norman, Oklahoma, at the Oklahoma Classic.
