DENTON — The UNT soccer team will host rival UTSA in its final home match of the season on Friday night, as the Mean Green will look for their first conference victory to keep their postseason hopes alive in what will mark the final home game for legendary head coach John Hedlund, who will retire following his 32nd season at the helm of the program he started from scratch. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UNT (4-6-6, 0-3-5) is coming off a dramatic, come-from-behind 1-1 draw with American Conference leader Memphis on Sunday. The Mean Green need to win their final two games, with the season finale set for Tuesday night in Tulsa, and have some help to qualify for the conference tournament.
The Mean Green are 8-6-1 all-time against the Roadrunners and 5-1-1 all-time in home matches, and haven't lost at home to UTSA since the programs' first-ever meeting in 2008.
UNT is looking to build some positive momentum with two matches remaining in the regular season. Junior forward Claire Niedermeier has 13 goals in the team's 16 matches this season to lead the conference, while sophomore forward Payton Annis has two goals and three assists on the year, with both goals having come in conference action. Lily Cunningham leads the team with five assists, while Mia Bernard is second with four.
The first 100 fans in attendance will receive John Hedlund Bobbleheads.
