DENTON — The UNT soccer team will hit the road to take on Tulsa in the regular-season finale on Tuesday night, as the Mean Green look to win a second straight match and get some outside help to earn a spot in the American Conference Championships next week in Florida. The game is set for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UNT (5-6-6, 1-3-5) notched a 2-1 victory over rival UTSA on Friday night at home to pick up its first conference win of the season after three straight draws, and now the Mean Green can extend the career of legendary head coach John Hedlund for a while longer if they can beat Tulsa and get either a loss from UTSA or a loss or draw from East Carolina. Hedlund will retire following the season, which is his 32nd at the helm of the program he began in 1995.
The Mean Green are 5-1-2 all-time against the Golden Hurricane and are 3-0 all-time in Tulsa.
UNT is looking to keep up its positive momentum after a rough stretch of matches and have been playing its best soccer in October, highlighted by the last two matches — a 1-1 draw with regular-season conference champion Memphis and the 2-1 win on Friday over defending conference tournament champion UTSA.
Junior forward Claire Niedermeier has 13 goals in the team's 17 matches this season to lead the conference and has won back-to-back American Offensive Player of the Week awards, while sophomore forward Payton Annis has three goals and four assists on the year, with all three goals having come in conference action. She had a goal and an assist in Friday's win over the Roadrunners. Lily Cunningham leads the team with five assists, while Mia Bernard is tied for second with Annis (4).
