DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team got back on track with a 56-47 victory over Tulane Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
North Texas (14-11, 8-5 American) has now won three of its past four games thanks to another stingy defensive effort. It held Tulane to just 33% from the field and 3-of-19 on three-pointers, resulting in UNT's lowest point total allowed in a league game since joining the American Conference. The Mean Green also controlled the possession battle by forcing 16 Tulane turnovers and gaining a 45-28 advantage on the glass.
Individually, Megan Nestor added another stellar performance to a season full of them with 10 points, 28 rebounds and three steals. It was her fifth 20-rebound game of the season and would've broken both the program and conference records for boards in a game if not for her 31 against Texas Southern back on Dec. 6. Nestor has now recorded a double double in 11 of her last 12 games and is averaging 13.5 PPG alongside 16.8 RPG during league play.
Nestor's performance also increased her season rebound total to 359, jumping her from fourth to second most in program history. She is just six boards shy of breaking Sharon Shelton's all-time record of 364, which has been standing for nearly 50 years.
"What Megan's doing on the rebounds is just absolutely phenomenal," said head coach Jason Burton. "More than just the boards, I thought she was fantastic as far as making plays. She had some big plays in our press. She had some big deflections that led to steals or she got the steal herself."
Aysia Proctor was also instrumental in the win, scoring a game-high 21 points while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals. She has been the game's top scorer in back-to-back contests and is now averaging 15.1 points per game against American competition.
Another impactful performance came from Andi Schissler, whose 14 points were her most in a game since Nov. 13 against Nelson (17). She sank three more triples on the afternoon, making her 13-of-24 from deep over the past five games.
UNT goes for its third consecutive home win Tuesday night against UAB. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. CT tip-off and can be streamed on ESPN+ or listened to through the Varsity Network App.
