DENTON, Texas – Senior forward Megan Nestor broke the program's single-season rebounding record as the UNT women's basketball team crushed UAB, 84-54, Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
Nestor had no issue securing the six rebounds needed to surpass Sharon Shelton's record 364 from the 1977-78 season, doing so by the 8:50 mark of the third quarter. She finished the game with 16 points and 14 boards, marking her 17th double double of the year and increasing her season rebound total to 373. With four games remaining in the regular season, Nestor now aims to break the American Conference's record of 418 set by South Florida's Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu in 2023.
Nestor has recorded a double double in 12 of her last 13 games and is averaging 13.7 points and 16.6 rebounds during conference play.
"Coming from the NAIA level, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it," Nestor said. "It feels really special. Being recognized and doing what I'm doing with my team just means a lot to me."
North Texas (15-11, 9-5 American) has now won four of its past games, including three in a row at the Super Pit. It was a complete performance, as five Mean Green players reached double-digit scoring while the defense held UAB to just 54 points and forced 19 turnovers. UNT also matched its season-low with six turnovers and did not commit a single one in the second half.
For the third consecutive game, Aysia Proctor was the game-high scorer as she poured in 22 points on an efficient 9-of-16 from the floor. She is shooting nearly 41% from behind the arc since the start of league play while scoring 15.6 points per game. Andi Schissler also produced another impactful game with 13 points and three more triples, making her 16-of-34 from deep over the last six games.
Meanwhile, the two primary point guards in Cherie Spencer and Jazzy Owens-Barnett combined for 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, four steals and just one turnover.
"I thought this was one of our most complete games this year from start to finish," head coach Jason Burton said. "How we guarded. How we played. The energy we came out with. Attention to detail when it came to following a gameplan and executing the gameplan, offensively and defensively. Our players did a really great job of reading the defense and taking what the defense was giving us."
UNT goes for its third straight victory on Saturday at Charlotte. The game is slated for a 4 p.m. CT tip-off and can be streamed on ESPN+ or listened to through the Varsity Network App.
