CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNT women's basketball team matched its biggest comeback of the season as it overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat Charlotte, 82-73, Saturday evening at Halton Arena.
After Charlotte scored the first dozen points of the game and later built a 13-point advantage in the second quarter, North Texas (16-11, 10-5 American) stormed back thanks to an elite offensive attack that made 10-of-18 three-pointers and 16-of-17 shots from the free throw line. Despite Charlotte entering the game as the nation's fourth best offensive rebounding team, UNT won the battle on the glass, 32-30, and limited the 49ers to just 12 offensive boards.
Leading the charge was Jazzy Owens-Barnett and Andi Schissler, who became UNT's first pair of teammates this season to score 20+ points in the same game. Owens-Barnett tied her career-high with 21 points and shot 10-of-11 from the charity stripe alongside three rebounds, four assists and a steal. Meanwhile, Schissler sank six triples, the most by a UNT player since the season opener, as part of her Division I career-high 20 points.
The Mean Green defense played a big part in the comeback as well, holding Charlotte to just 27 points in the second half.
"That defensive effort in the second half was what did it for us," head coach Jason Burton said. "I thought our players did a great job down the stretch knocking down free throws. Jazzy-Owens Barnett, 10-of-11, was big time. We wanted to get her the ball down the stretch in those clutch situations and she knocked them down."
Aysia Proctor and Mekhia Chase also reached double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively, while Megan Nestor had eight points and 14 rebounds.
With just three conference games remaining, North Texas now returns home for back-to-back games at the Super Pit. The first comes Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against UTSA and can be streamed on ESPN+ or listened to through the Varsity Network App.
