DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team cruised past in-state rival UTSA, 87-63, Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
With the victory, North Texas (17-11, 11-5) has now won four straight games and six of its last seven. Tuesday's win came in dominant fashion as the Mean Green led for over 35 minutes of game time and built a lead as high as 38 early in the fourth quarter. North Texas controlled both ends of the floor, sinking 11 three-pointers and 20-of-25 free throws while forcing 21 UTSA turnovers and surrendering just one triple.
The 24-point margin of victory was tied for UNT's second largest in series history and gave Jason Burton his first win over UTSA as head coach of the program. It also marked the program's first time since the 2001-02 campaign to have scored 80+ points in three consecutive conference games.
"Just really proud of our team," Burton said. "We knocked down some shots early. That always helps, and it's great to see Andi on the tear that she's on, but not just that. I thought a lot of players stepped up today."
North Texas secured a commanding lead early and never looked back thanks to a 17-0 run midway through the first quarter. Andi Schissler was pivotal in that effort, scoring a Division I career-high 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting from behind the arc. It was her second consecutive game registering at least 20 points and six three-pointers.
The Mean Green received contributions from all throughout the roster, including double-digit scoring outputs from Chania Price (14), Aysia Proctor (12) and Mekhia Chase (11). Price made two three-pointers in a game for the second time this season and wound up just one point shy of her career high.
North Texas hosts South Florida Saturday at 2 p.m. in its final regular season game at the Super Pit. Five Mean Green seniors will be honored before the game for Senior Day. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ while Sam Kaman provides radio coverage through the Varsity Network App.
