RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The UNT women's golf team wrapped up the 18-team field Purdue Puerto Rico Classic on Monday with a final-round score of 292 (+4) to finish in 11th place of the tournament that featured nine teams ranked inside the top 50.
The Mean Green finished ahead of notable opponents such as No. 29 Iowa State, No. 44 Michigan and No. 65 Minnesota. This was the second year in row North Texas played in the completive Puerto Rico tournament that was once again held at the Grand Reserve Golf Course. The Mean Green improved on last year's score by 19 strokes while also battling tougher weather conditions this year.
"The ladies showed some good things this week," said North Texas head coach Michael Akers. "We did not go low on the par fives like we normally do as they played long. Obviously our preparation was impacted dramatically with recent weather."
Occasional rain and heavy winds challenged the golfers on Monday.
Leading the Mean Green were Mason Lewis and Bouquet Subsomboon who each shot below par over the three-round tournament and placed in the top 30 of the player leaderboard.
Through the first two rounds Lewis was near the top of the leaderboard. The senior shot seven-under par through the first 36 holes and was ahead of players who were ranked in the top 25 in the nation, including ahead of the No. 1 overall ranked player.
Subsomboon had a more pedestrian start to the tournament but finished strong on Monday as she shot a 70 (-2) on the final round. It was the overall tournament's seventh lowest third-round score. Monday was Subsomboon's seventh round this season shooting a 70 or lower.
UNT freshman Marin Fujiyasu continues to show growth since the winter break. She opened the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday with a first-round score of 71 (-1). It's her lowest single round score of the year. This weekend's performance for Fujiyasu comes on the heels of a second-place finish on Jan. 18 in a dual versus Houston Christian where she shot a 72 in the single round dual at the Golf Course of Houston, which is also where the Mean Green's next competition after returning from Puerto Rico will be held.
"Mason really had it going on the first day," Akers said. "I'm very pleased with the way Marin looks since returning from break. I'm sure Kat is very motivated to return to the line-up. We need her to return to form for us to really reach our potential. We will begin preparing for Houston and are very familiar with that course."
North Texas will return to the continental United States and prepare for another loaded field as they'll compete in the Chevron Collegiate hosted by the University of Houston starting Feb. 23 at the Golf Course of Houston where they defeated Houston Christian earlier in the semester.
