Ciangherotti earns match-clinching win on line five
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis program continued its hot streak Friday afternoon, taking down Texas State 4-2 to earn its fourth consecutive win.
After dropping the doubles point, the Mean Green bounced back for four singles victories to improve to 7-4 this season and snap Texas State's six-match win streak and drop the Bobcats to 6-3.
"What a great team win today," head coach Amanda Stone said. "I'd like to take the credit because I did change my shoes after the doubles point, but all the credit goes the players and how they handled a tough situation against a loud, feisty team. The response after losing the doubles point was incredible. Even weathering some early momentum from them and just refusing to go away. It was a huge moment for our freshmen Giuliana and Ujin being able to deliver some big points at the bottom. We really stepped up. I love the toughness this team is building with each match. It's showing in the way they fight for each other. They are really believing and battling to the very end."
UNT got singles wins from Lou Chalard, Carolina Laydner, Ujin Batsukh and the thrilling match-clinching point from Guiliana Ciangherotti to propel them to victory.
In doubles action, the combination of Marina Adati and Lou Chalard held a 5-2 lead but could not finish their match as Texas State picked up victories on lines two and three to take the doubles point.
The Mean Green, led by Chalard at line one, answered in a big way. Chalard, who has now won six consecutive singles matches, was dominant once again in her matchup with a 6-1, 6-0 victory to knot the team score at 1-1.
Moments later, it was Batsukh's turn to extend her win streak with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at line six to push her tally to five and give UNT a 2-1 lead.
Playing at line two, Laydner dropped her opening set 3-6 and needed a comeback for her victory. She did so in strong fashion with back-to-back 6-1 wins in the second and third sets to push the Mean Green one point away from the win.
Texas State picked up a win at line four to make the score 3-2, but the Mean Green sealed the win when Ciangherotti finished off a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at line five and make the final score 4-2.
With the win, North Texas has now won four straight matches for the first time since 2024 and matches the longest win streak of the Amanda Stone era.
UNT will return to action Sunday when they take on FIU at 11:00 AM at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
